As a sort of a warm up prior to the second edition of “Ruschuk” International friendly tournament for women (that one is set to take place from 29 September to 1 October), BC Dunav Ruse hosted a friendly tournament for Girls U-13 as well. The junior competition also had a Romanian participant in it, as will have the women's one. Both the visiting team of Star Bucharest and home team Dunav Precis Inter though were beaten by Dorostol Silistra - the Bulgarian champions for Girls U-12 in 2007/08.
In the first game Dunav Precis Inter defeated the visitors from Bucharest 63-54. But they only did so with a strong last 10 minutes, as the game had been quite close and the Romanian girls had led by a margin of 5 before the start of that last quarter. Gloria Atanasova notched up 12 points for the hosts, while Mihaela Dragomir led the scoring for Star Bucharest with 8.
In the second match though the girls from Ruse, who were 4-th placed in Girls U-12 finals in Montana this year, were unable to contend with the champions. Dorostol won easily 83-49, as Anguelova scored a total of 21 points for their victory, with 13 of them coming in the very firts quarter.
After the first two games most people would have expected the team from Silistra to have no problems disposing of their opponent in the third one - Star Bucharest. But, to their credit, the Romanian girls fought bravely and even had an opportunity to win the game in the dying seconds. They had the ball with 66-66 on the scorebord, but Dragomir was unlucky to miss the shot for the win and the match went into an overtime. In that one Dorostol showed their mettle to win by 77-71.
So the winner in the final standings of the tournament is Dorostol Silistra (2-0), second is home team Dunav Precis Inter (1-1) and third is Star Bucharest (0-2). But what is more importnat than the results and standings - all three teams played good basketball and many of the girls showed great potential for the future. Also, it was a precious opportunity for them to gain experience and feel "the heat of the battle".
