Men's National Team of Serbia is without head coach. Dragan Sakota resigned four months before the Eurobasket 2007 in Spain.
"I thought about many things when I made this decision. The interest for Serbian basketball is above any clubs and personal matters. I believe it's better to resign now and give a cnahce to the newly expert commision in Serbian Basketball federation to get a new coach in time before the Eurobasket", said Dragan Sakota on special pressconference.
“At the end, I would like to thank all those who were truly with national team, to my assistants, media and all those who put Serbian basketball at the first place,” he said.
Sakota was hired as head coach of Serbia back in February 2006. Same year they reached Eightfinal of World Cup in Japan where they lost to Spain 75 - 87.
Dragan Sakota was assistant of coach Zeljko Obradovic in Athens during the Olimpic Games and in 2005 when Serbia hosted Eurobasket.
One of the biggest favorites to get a new job as head coach of Serbia is legendary point guard Sasa Djordjevic.
Serbia are in Group A of the EuroBasket with defending champions Greece, Russia and the team that wins the additional qualifying tournament.
An expert comission which includes Ranko Zeravica, Bozidar Maljkovic, Svetislav Pesic, Dusko Vujosevic, Zoran Slavnic, Drazen Dalipagic and Ratko Radovanovic will make a recommendation for the new coach of Serbia before the start of preparations for Eurobasket 2007 in Spain.
