The Dallas Mavericks acquired an experienced backup for newly acquired Jason Kidd, signing point guard Tyronn Lue on Tuesday.

The 6-foot Lue played 33 games for the Atlanta Hawks this season, averaging 6.8 points and 1.8 assists. He was traded to the Sacramento Kings in the Mike Bibby deal but never saw action due to a left calf strain and subsequently was waived.

Lue will be a serviceable reserve for the Mavericks, who acquired Kidd prior to last month’s trade deadline. Dallas currently relies on the inexperienced Jose Juan Barea and Jason Terry, who is more of an off-guard.

A 10-year veteran, Lue has career averages of 9.1 points, 3.4 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 493 games with five different teams.

The 30-year-old Lue had the best offensive season of his career with the Hawks last campaign, averaging 11.4 points, 3.6 assists and 1.9 rebounds. He won NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 and 2001.
