Great win but not enough
Bulgarian men's national team defeat Bosnia and Hercegovina by single point 70 – 69 but that difference wasn’t enough for eventual qualifying for additional tournament in Menorca at the end of the month. Bulgaria lost the first game in Bosna by 4 points and in case both teams will finish with same amount of wins and losses Bosnia and Hercegovina will have advantage.
In the beginning of the game visitors were slightly better. They had 6 points advantage with minute to go in the quarter (11-17). Thanks to 8 consecutive points in second quarter their advantage was 10 points in minute 14 of the game (25-15). However in the next 3 minutes Bulgaria went on 12 to nothing run to take the lead 27-25. Before the half time break Bosnia and Hercegovina were 6 points up but unbelievable 3 point shot by Roderick Blakney got through and cut the lead to only 3 points (33-36). Until that moment Stoykov had 11 points, Kaloyan Ivanov and Blakney 7 points apiece while tha American with Bulgarian passport also had 4 assists. Bulgarians hold the rebounds edge (20-15). However those three players didn’t get that much of offensive help by the other teammates.
Second half began with the same way like the first one. Bosnia had 40-36, 4 points lead in 22 minute. Thanks to the great defense in the next 4 minutes Bulgaria managed 12 consecutive points to get up by 8 points (48-40) with 4 minutes to go in the third quarter. Before the start of the last quarter the score was even – 53 points each team.
With 3 minutes to go visitors had a 5 points advantage and everything looked over for the host team that needed 5 points win in order to have chances to end on first place in the group. The miracle almost happen as with 1 minute to go in the game Bulgaria was up by 4 points (70-66). They even had a chance to get over the desired 5 points win but Dimitar Anguelov lost the ball with 12 seconds to go and never home team never had a shot in their last possession. Bosnian Terrel Castle even had a chance to bring the victory for his team but missed the first free throw and then on purpose missed the second one as well. It was better for Bosnians to lose by single point than to push the game to overtime and then you never know what was going to happen.
Kaloyan Ivanov was the best scorer on the floor with 20 points while Blakney and Stoykov added 16 points each for the win of Bulgarians.
Bosnia and Hercegovina proved that they are solid team. Mirza Teletovic and Jasmin Hukic managed very important shots behind the 3 point arc when the game was online. Hukic finished with 16 points, Vasilievic added 13, while the big guy Kenan Bajramovic scored 12 points.
Bulgaria visit Hungary this coming Wednesday in their last game of these qualifications. In order to get through now Bulgaria must win in Hungary and then to wait for the miracle and Hungarian win in Bosna next Saturday.
