Marko Popovic and Tariq Kirksay each scored 17 points as UNICS Kazan came back from a 14-point first leg deficit to thrash Energa Czarni 89-50 and advance to the Eurocup second Qualifying Round. Vladimir Veremeenko added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Terrell Lyday chipped in 13 points as the Russian side Kazan made more than good the 76-62 first leg loss in Poland. UNICS forced 24 turnovers and only committed 10 in cruising to the victory. Jason Straight did all he could to help Energa with 16 points but he was the only player in double figures for Czarni, which was unable to advance in its first ever action in Europe but will now play in the Eurocup Challenge. Demeric Bennett, who scored 15 points in the first leg, did not play for the Polish team.

Popovic hit two triples in scoring eight points as UNICS blasted ahead 13-4 in front of the home fans. Igor Zamanskiy’s foul shot made it 18-6 late in the first quarter and Popovic connected again from downtown as the lead was 25-13 after one period. Kresmir Loncar opened the second frame but the guests tried to stay in the game as Pawel Malesa and Jack Ingram both knocked down three-balls to remain within 29-19. Kirksay and Veremeenko took over however and Lyday hit back-to-back triples to push the advantage to 43-21. Marcin Sroka hit a three-ball of his own to trim the deficit to 17 points but Kirksay and Dmitry Sokolov both threw down dunks in the final 30 seconds of the first half for a 54-30 lead at the break.

Popovic started the second half with two more triples and Lyday followed with a trey of his own as the lead swelled to 63-32. Straight answered with a three-pointer but the Russian side used Czarni turnovers to get out on the fast break and Tirksay finished the third period with a layup to make it 75-40. Straight remained determined to keep the Polish side in the game with a three-pointer to start the fourth and Pawel Leonczyk’s lay-up trimmed the margin to 77-45. But Energa would not get any closer the rest of the contest.
