First win for Partizan over Real, Efes Pilsen and CSKA undefeated

It was lucky number 13 for Partizan Belgrade as the Serbian champs came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Real Madrid 81-77 for the first time in club history on Wednesday night at Pionir Arena.
All five starters scored in double figures as head coach Dusko Vujosevic’s men held on with a gritty performance that ended a run of 12 straight losses to Madrid. Partizan improved to 1-1 in Group D and will host Armani jeans Milano in the Serbian capital next week. Madrid dropped to 1-1 and will host Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow next week.
Partizan took a big early lead as Milenko Tepic and Aleksandar Rasic heated up in the first quarter and remained on top 44-38 at halftime. Quinton Hosley scored 7 straight points in a 0-13 third-quarter run as Madrid took its first lead. However Rasic, Novica Velickovic and Cedomir Vitkovac led Partizan back to tie it and set up a thrilling fourth quarter. Strong defense and clutch triples from Tepic and Rasic put Partizan back on top, but the game would remain close till the end. In the last minute, the hosts stayed focused and Hosley committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Uros Tripkovic that allowed Partizan’s fans to celebrate early.
Rasic finished with 18 points, Tepic scored 16 and dished 5 assists, Velickovic added 13 points, Stephane Lasme 12 and Vitkovac 10. Sergio Llull came off the bench to pace Madrid with 19, Hosley recorded 14 points and 8 rebounds, Felipe Reyes added 11 points and Lazaros Papadopoulos had 10 for the visitors, who shot 2 for 12 from downtown.
Efes Pilsen stayed undefeated in Group D and ties with CSKA for first place by downing Armani Jeans Milano 71-81 on the road on Wednesday night. Efes improved to 2-0 while AJ Milano dropped to 0-2.
Milos Vujanic led the winners with 19 points. Bootsy Thornton added 17, Charles Smith had 14, Michalis Kakiouzis got 12 while Kerem Gonlum contributed 10 and 9 rebounds for Efes.
David Hawkins led Milano with 20 points. Jobey Thomas added 14, Marco Mordente had 13 while Mike Hall got 10 for the hosts.
A three-point play by Vujanic gave Efes a 17-20 lead after 10 minutes. Efes improved its defense while Smith, Vujanic and Kakiouzis boosted the guests' lead to 33-43 at halftime. A three-pointer by Thornton broke the game open, 39-58, late in the third quarter. Thomas, Mordente and Hawkins brought Milano within 69-75 but Thornton stepped up to make a more experienced Efes seal a well-deserved win.
The first Euroleague home game for Panionos On Telecoms this decade came with an inconvenient detail for the hosts: the name of the opponent. The reigning Euroleague champions from CSKA Moscow took no pity on Panionios in its Group D home opener and rolled to a 52-86 victory in Athens on Wednesday. That didn't dampen the spirits of the local fans, however, as they stayed on their feet chanting all the way to the final buzzer.
CSKA took control early and kept adding chunks to the lead until the game was out of reach for Panionios soon after halftime. CSKA's inside advantage was illustrated by 59% two-point shooting (25 for 42), a 24-45 rebounding advantage and 7 blocked shots to zero by Panionios.
Not surprisingly, big man Erazem Lorbek led the winners with 17 points, while Nikos Zisis came off the bench to add 14.
Despite suffocating defense throughout by the visitors, Panionios got 14 points from Branko Cvetkovic, 11 from Ioannis Kalambokis and 10 from Goran Nikolic. CSKA improved to 2-0 in Group D while Panionios continues to look for a first victory.
