Zoran Slavnic has been confirmed as the new coach of Serbia.
The former Yugoslavia international player has replaced Dragan Sakota, who resigned last week after failing to gain the backing of Dragan Kapicic, the new president of the Serbian Basketball Federation (KSS).
The 57-year-old Slavnic was unanimously approved by the KSS Executive Board after being recommended by the Expert Council, a body on which Slavnic serves alongside Dusko Vujosevic, who last week was appointed the first-ever coach of newly-independent Montenegro.
Slavnic ranks as one of Serbia's basketball legends, having won a world title with Yugoslavia in 1978 and Olympic gold two years later.
He played for Red Star from 1965 until 1975, and then for Spanish outfit Joventut, Yugoslav outfit Sibenka, Italian club Caserta and Partizan Belgrade, and as a coach he has led the likes of Partizan Belgrade, Red Star, Sibenka, Joventut, Bamberg (Germany) and Serbian outfit Atlas.
