Italy coach Carlo Recalcati made good on his pledge to bring back two of the silver-medal winning heroes from the Athens Olympics by naming veterans Massimo Bulleri and Giacomo Galanda in his 18-strong preliminary squad for EuroBasket 2007.
Recalcati chose to leave the duo out of his group at last year’s FIBA World Championship in Japan but has given both a chance to make this year’s team that will play against Slovenia, France and Poland in the group stages.
Andrea Bargnani, a rookie with the Toronto Raptors this year, and Armani Jeans Milano sensation Danilo Gallinari are in the group as expected, along with Marco Belinelli, the 18th overall pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 2007 NBA draft .
Young center Andrea Crosariol has been rewarded for his fine effort with Virtus Bologna as has Daniel Hackett - a 1.99m guard at the University of Southern California who impressed while playing for an experimental Azzurri squad earlier this summer.
Several members of the team who played in Japan are in the group, including veterans Gianluca Basile, Denis Marconato, Fabio Di Bella, Angelo Gigli, Stefano Mancinelli, Denis Marconato, Marco Mordente, Mason Rocca and Matteo Soragna.
