Balkan Botevgrad moved to the second place in the current standing in our Men’s A-1 after defeating Spartak Pleven with 72-55. The team already has 11 wins and 5 losses – the same as Levski, but the players from Botevgrad won the direct clash. In the next round, they will face each other in Sofia and the winner will finish second after the first phase of the national championship. One thing is sure – today’s victory assured the team of Georgi Mladenov a spot among the best four teams.

Congratulations for the young team of Balkan. After starting with three losses, it woke up and from that moment on the guys registered 11 successes and only 2 defeats (one of them against the title pretendant Lukoil Academic).

Spartak Pleven has the same result as two other teams – CSKA Interlogic and Cherno more Eurohold – 9 wins and 7 losses. However, both of them could not control their standings. If CSKA win the next two fights, they will take the 4th position. To hope for something more, Spartak should keep their fingers crossed for CSKA to lose in one of the two rounds until the end.

The whole game in Botevgrad was entirely under control of the hosts who were leading during all the time. The visitors hardly found a way to score in their opponents’ basket. On the half time Balkan were leading by 15 points and during the third and fourth period the lowest difference twice was 9 points. Although Pleven wanted to change the happening on the playing ground, they could not do it. Two minutes to go, the difference went to 19 points in favour of the home team – 71-52. Finally, Spartak Pleven made it for 72-55.

We have to mention the perfect defense Balkan demonstrated as they let their opponents score the modest 55 points. It was a disastrous day for Spartak today. Their percentage from the 2-points-line was 29.6 % (8/27) and 20.7 % for 3 points.

On the top in this game was the veteran Dwayne Morton who finished with double-double – 25 points and 10 rebounds for 37 minutes spent on court. He showed unique abilities in shooting – 9/11 for 2 points, 1/1 for 3 points and 4/5 from the free throw line. The Lilov brothers added 13 points each. The younger – Ivan gave 6 assists as well, while Lyubomir took 6 rebounds.

At the end, Georgi Mladenov put into play all the youngsters in the lines of Balkan and pleased the great audience in the full gym.

For the guests Sasa Topcov (9 points) and Hrisimir Dimitrov (7 points and 6 assists) were far away of what we are used to see. The only player who passed the two-digit-border was the student of the Botevgrad basketball school – Iliya Stankov – 14 points and 6 rebounds.
