A strong first half performance proved enough as Bulgaria beat Greece 65-55 at the U18 European Championship Men 2009 in Metz, France.
Greece jumped out to an early 8-3 lead but Bulgaria quickly got into their groove and had a 24-14 advantage built up by the end of the first quarter thanks to some dead-eye shooting from Emil Binev and Ventislav Petkov.
And Georgi Miadenov's team kept adding to their lead, going into the break up by 20, 43-23, after an impressive three-point display in the second quarter, at one point hitting four long bombs in a row.
Greece shot a miserable eight for 30 from the field in the first half (including just three for 16 from three-point territory) and such were their shooting woes that they missed 10 of their 14 free-throw attempts.
The Greeks did rediscover some shooting touch in the final quarter, cutting the deficit to 11, 54-43 on Yannis Angelopoulos' three-pointer with just over six minutes left to play. But Bulgaria, despite having shooting woes of their own after the break, made timely baskets to deflate their opponents and secure their first win of the tournament.
"We hit some open shots in the first two quarters and Greece didn't have that luck," said Binev, who finished with a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds.
"The second half was a lot harder offensively. We were not as accurate so we tried to rely more on our offense and we held on."
Plamen Hristov contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds for Bulgaria while Ioannis Angelopoulos led the way for Greece also with 16 points.
